Treatments & Services
Conscious Sedation
NOTE: All of these are forms of conscious sedation and the
patient is not ‘put to sleep’.
Premedication: Some anxious patients may be sufficiently comfortable
to proceed with treatment by taking a sedative tablet prior to their
visit. This can be prescribed for use on its own or along with other
types of sedation in the surgery.
Oral Sedation: This form of sedation, while not routinely used, can
be of benefit in the case of extremely nervous and needle phobic
patients. It is of use with special needs patients where cooperation
for the placement of a cannula is not possible to obtain without
some sedation. As this sedation relies on absorption from the gut it
is less predictable than the other two types of sedation.
Inhalation Sedation: Also known as Relative Analgesia (RA) or ‘happy
air/gas’, this form of conscious sedation is suitable for many
mildly anxious, cooperative patients. It is a gas called Nitrous
Oxide combined with Oxygen that is breathed in through the nose
allowing the patient to feel more comfortable and relaxed. It is
very safe and loses it’s effect once the patient stops breathing the
gas. It is suitable for most children and adults.
Intravenous Sedation: Also known as IV sedation, this form of
sedation is also very safe and is used instead of a general
anaesthetic for many cases in modern dentistry. It involves the
placement of a cannula (like giving blood) in the back of the hand
or inside the elbow. The sedation takes effect almost immediately
and the patient will feel relaxed and sleepy. It is suitable for
very anxious patients and is not used for children in primary care
settings. The patient will feel the effects of the sedation for the
rest of the day.

Your First Appointment
You will be warmly welcomed to The Dental Suite and shown to Reception for entering you details onto our computer system. After this you go into the Waiting Suite where you may complete a form about your medical and dental history. This is important so we know all about you and give you the most suitable treatment. If you are taking any medications it is important to give us the name of and dose of all medications. It would be helpful to bring a written list with you.
Your first examination will be very detailed and precise. Your mouth, face and neck will be checked. If you are in pain or aware of anything unusual, or something you worry about, it is important to tell us.

Your Treatment Plan
There are many options of dental treatments and you will be given
choices according to your budget.
Some treatments require complex planning for major reconstruction
work. Where relevant, we may need specific x-rays, photographs and
dental models. During your follow up consultation you may be shown
your models on a mechanical device that simulates your jaw. This is
used to explain your treatment and the procedures until completion.
In some cases you may be shown waxed models to give you an idea of
how your teeth will look when completed.
It is important to realise that everyone is different and that
treatments for one person may not be suitable for another.
